I continue to be transformed by your words of wisdom...clearly from Christ!  The most recent powerhouse being The Power of a Focused Mother.  I continue my struggle against the strong pull to serve the Lord outside my home....yes, equally pulled to toss the TV (which we just did), read/cuddle/play with kids, make nice meals, be as joyful as I can, and be fervent about my vocation as a wife and mother (which I have spent many, many, many years avoiding and surviving instead of thriving.  I have always gleaned from your words.

A mom in Texas who heard Renee speak on this topic blogged about it and wrote:
I went to the Homeschool Book Fair. ... Can you believe it, The Power of a Focused Mother. Wow just what I needed. I was sure somehow the speaker, Renee Ellison, would show me what was going on. Little did I know God wanted me there and would end up showing me what was going wrong.  She opened with where is your focus, what is your perspective, what is your child’s perspective and then what hit me hard, would your child want you for a mom? I was sitting in a room full of people and God grabbed me and showed me it wasn’t all the external stuff that mattered, what I was feeling was my fault. I had lost my focus. I was the problem. I sat and listened, cried, prayed and allowed God to use the speaker to show me what was wrong and how to get back on track.

Our whole family has learned about No Monkey Business

Mrs. Ellison, here is a “funny” from last November.  I thought I should forward it to the source of No Monkey Business.  My kids have listened to your CD on “No Monkey Business” about once a year since I bought it!  Evidently, it has made an impression on them!  Today in the van, the kids were telling me about a kid in their AWANA program who is misbehaved and disruptive.  Sarah (5) said, “So-and-so does not obey.” Lily (Sarah’s twin) added, “His parents probably don’t spank him.” Then Jack (7) joins in with, “He doesn’t follow the ‘No Monkey Business’ rule.” I asked if they had such a rule at AWANA called “No Monkey Business.” They said, “No!  It’s that CD we listened to!”

Even the children relish in your (and now my!) style of discipline!

I spoke with you concerning my cluttered house and asked advice on how to handle the clutter in my house caused by other people giving me things that I no longer wanted or never did want.  I followed your advice and offered it back to them… you were right they did not want it either.  This released me with them to get rid of a lot of stuff.  No more do I hear..."Where did you put “x” that I gave you?” You have helped me to gain control back of my house.  I was in tears talking to you that day, but I must say I am forever grateful for the short time we had together.

Since meeting you I have also tried to simplify my life and stuff...so far I have done good.  Yet I have a ways to go, I have not arrived as of yet.  My husband’s work office/ spare bedroom is still in great need of help as it also serves as a shed (that we do not have) for storage of things I know not were to put.  And there are times I will go a week with a spotless house, but watch out the next week that is not so.  So I am still trying to arrive.

I want to share with you that Renee is my FAVORITE speaker at the Arlington TX Homeschool Book Fair.  She has blessed me with many of her “helps books”.  She just has this sweet sweet Spirit about her like she really knows who she is in Christ so I try never to miss her talks.  Just wanted to encourage her in case she needed any encouragement today. Want to know how Renee helped our home school?  5 years ago in Oklahoma City my wife Jennifer was walking through the booths at the homeschool convention, bought a few of her booklets and she told Jennifer about ACE as a great program for learning to read, then being somewhat self-paced after that.  It has been such a wonderful blessing to us as a family we just wanted to thank her for her direction in that regard.  Jennifer has purchased several of Renee’s booklets as well and just wanted her to know what a positive impact she has had on our homeschool experience.  Thanks!

There is much wisdom in your booklets, simply laid out for hectic parents and homeschoolers who don’t want another part time job reading through excess verbiage in hope of finding treasure.  It’s right there in your writing for a quick read and quick application.  Zoom-Type is just superb in simplicity, effectiveness and ease of use for the “kidlins”.  You are offering a great service to moms and dads who need easy to implement helps.

I have a friend who was convicted to wear feminine clothing a couple of years ago.  I gave her my copy of Feminine Dress to encourage her.  She passed it along to her sister.  This sister became convicted to wear skirts if she was going to be anywhere around Christian men.  One night she had left for a small group meeting and went back home to change when she realized that she was in pants.

Your writing is concise and convincing

I thought your ideas concise and convincing.  Your support of experiential truths with the Word substantiates the experiences.  I really liked the ‘woman to woman’ feel of the text.  So many books are written by men ... there is so much more through a woman’s experience and her knowledge of her “fallen” state that comes through in the “light-hearted” kind of approach you took.  ...it is our testimony that allows us to “sharpen” each other.  Technical stuff is great, but personal touch brings teaching home to the heart.

Home management strategies

Thanks!  I won one of your cd’s at a raffle at the San Diego Above Rubies retreat.  I could listen to the cd over and over again.  It was a home management cd.  I was so motivated.  I cleaned my closet and bedroom the best, it’s ever looked and gave 4 large garbage bags of clothes away to a large family in my congregation. Thanks for explaining how easy it really can be : )

Super!  We’re so glad!  Someone has said, cleaning out is like scratching the soul.  Though, I personally tend to accumulate stuff, so I just observe Renee going to town on it.  The past few weeks she has been on a real thorough track of cleaning out/organizing our garage and warehouse, and the results are wonderful!  Todd

Thank you too for your excellent book on the Headcovering; there is so little extant teaching available on this neglected and deeply unfashionable subject, by virtue of its being assumed a straightforward issue in times past, and now being considered a culturally and symbolically unacceptable issue in much of the church, and which hermeneutics must at all costs be made to negate and deny.  Your work on this subject is by far one of the most comprehensive and well-researched available; it also has the distinction of being written by one who practices it, and I am sure will be a great practical encouragement to many women who are thinking of covering.

I thoroughly enjoyed your presence at the conference.  I was so intrigued by your typing program that I took a leap of faith and finally ordered it.  In the beginning, I thought it was just “too good to be true.” My daughter begins her third day and is thoroughly enjoying it!  She is impressed that she has actually memorized some of the keyboard.  Last night she said, “Can I type in Word to see if this really works?” The blessing in it for us is that she is beginning 4th grade and is dyslexic and dysgraphic.  She is very bright, but writing is such a hindrance.  Everyone suggests typing for her, but if you can’t type well, it really can be just as slow and frustrating.  Thank you so much for your support.  I’m so thrilled with the typing program, now I’m saving for the piano course--for me!

Your classes at the recent conference had so much wisdom presented in them; I wish you would make your own tapes on your subjects.  I wasn’t able to make it to ”Teaching the Resistant Student”, but I bought your tape (along with 11 others).  As we set out for our 2 hour journey home the other two ladies (having been to at least 1, if not more, of your classes) insisted on hearing it FIRST.  I love the simplicity of your booklets/pamphlets.

I attended a homeschool convention for the very first time this past weekend.  My son is almost 6 and we just made the decision to homeschool in the fall.  Your “burnout” lecture was the very last one that I went to, and I thought that it was THE BEST!  You are truly an inspiration and so full of wonderful information.  I hope that I can keep your words in my head (so when I talk to myself it will be positive) so that I can always provide a loving and peaceful environment for my boys.  I can’t wait to order some of your materials!

Dear Renee, Thank you for the impact you have had on my parents, Dr. and Mrs. D* H*, last year at the conference.  They came at our request and were “politely” skeptical of home-schooling.  After attending your seminar on “Why Home-Schooling?” they were intrigues and followed you around, attending your remaining sessions.  Mom has now bought your tapes and has shared them with other “skeptical” grandparents in her town.  My father was a professor of Engineering at Texas A&M for 30 years and really enjoyed your approach and truly felt youir teaching style was brilliant and well thought-out.  They have both talked to my brother’s wife and loaned them your tapes and now they are home-schooling also.  You have impacted our family probably for generations to come.
